Mumbai’s Grant Medical College Expels 2 MBBS Students from Hostel Over Ragging of First-Year Students

Grant Medical College in Mumbai has suspended two MBBS students from the hostel due to their involvement in ragging incidents. The suspension, recommended by the Anti-Ragging Committee, was enforced after the seniors were found guilty of harassing a first-year student while inebriated. The orders were issued on October 17.

The incident occurred shortly after the academic year 2024-25 began on October 14, when the senior students allegedly intimidated the junior by demanding his name and coercing him to dance within the college premises.

Following the incident, the Anti-Ragging Committee launched an investigation in line with the guidelines established by the National Medical Commission and the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS). Based on the investigation’s findings, the committee recommended that the two seniors be suspended from the hostel for one year.

The committee, which included a police officer, a parent, a journalist, and faculty members, submitted its report to MUHS.

As MBBS classes resumed at Grant Medical College and the affiliated JJ Hospital, an anti-ragging squad has been conducting daily rounds of the hostels. The two suspended students were found to be intoxicated during these inspections.

To promote a safe and secure environment on campus, first-year and second-year hostels are situated at opposite ends of the hospital grounds, and seniors are prohibited from interacting with freshmen in the hostel.
