A man named Joseph James, 50, has been arrested for allegedly raping a 24-year-old woman under the pretense of offering her a job, police reported on Saturday. The incident occurred in the jurisdiction of the Worli police station. The victim, a Thane resident seeking employment, had received Joseph’s contact number from a male friend.
On Thursday evening, the woman’s friend informed her that Joseph wanted to meet in Khar. She took a taxi to Khar, where she was joined by her friend and Joseph. The trio went to a hotel and consumed alcohol. Around midnight, they headed home.
The victim recounted to the police that Joseph offered to drop her at the Khar station, but instead claimed no trains were available at that hour and suggested she sleep in his car. At approximately 3 AM, while she was asleep in the car, Joseph allegedly began molesting her. When she resisted, he forcibly removed her clothes and raped her.
The victim further alleged that Joseph threatened her, telling her not to disclose the incident to anyone. However, she confided in a lawyer friend who advised her to file a complaint immediately. She then went to the nearest police station and reported the assault.
Based on her complaint, Worli police registered a case and subsequently arrested the accused.
