Officials said on Tuesday that the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 3535 grams of gold worth Rs 2.23 crore from two passengers arriving from Dubai at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
The passengers were apprehended. According to officials, surveillance was mounted at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport by a team of DRI officers based on specific intelligence that a syndicate is involved in the smuggling of gold into India with the help of two Indian passengers.
Officials said the two passengers were intercepted after flying from Dubai to Mumbai on Emirates Flight EK 500 on May 15, 2023. Gold in paste form was discovered during the examination and personal search of the aforementioned passengers.
According to officials, 3535 grams of gold paste were discovered hidden inside four plastic pouches wrapped in black tape. Further investigation revealed that both of them are members of the same syndicate based in Dubai. On a daily basis, the syndicate was involved in the smuggling of large amounts of gold.
