“MP’s Minor Children No Longer Citizens of India” Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Controversial Tweet

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stirred a fresh political controversy after he tweeted a cryptic message on Thursday, claiming that the minor children of a Member of Parliament from Assam are “no longer citizens of India.” While Sarma did not explicitly name the MP, political observers and opposition leaders believe the statement is aimed at Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, who represents the Kaliabor constituency.

Assam CM Sarma’s Post Triggers Reactions

“I say this with full responsibility the minor children of one Member of Parliament from Assam are no longer citizens of India. But this is just the beginning. There is much more yet to be revealed,” Sarma posted on X (formerly Twitter), triggering a flurry of reactions.

The tweet, cryptic but full of suggestion, is at a politically delicate moment. With the Lok Sabha elections around the corner, Assam’s parties have intensified their campaigns, and Sarma’s remarks are being interpreted as an effort to place the opposition above all, the Congress on the back foot.

Congress Defends Gaurav Gogoi

Sources in the BJP say that the tweet is one of the efforts to bring the Congress leadership’s “commitment to Indian values” into question. However, opposition leaders have criticized the action as a “cheap diversionary tactic” and “character assassination.”

Gaurav Gogoi, the son of former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, has as yet not reacted to the tweet publicly. Congress leaders in Assam have defended him, calling for the CM to either identify the MP and produce evidence or retract the statement.

APCC President Slams Assam CM’s Remarks

“Making such a serious allegation without naming anyone or producing evidence is unbecoming of a chief minister,” said Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhupen Borah. “This is a classic attempt to malign reputations for political gain.”

Experts in law have clarified that according to Indian law, children can enjoy dual citizenship but only in a limited number of circumstances, and the government must give a sufficient reason if the citizenship has been renounced or revoked.

With speculation building, everyone waits with bated breath for the next step from either party. Sarma’s tweet assures that “much more is yet to be revealed,” which implies that further revelations or accusations might be on the cards in the days to come.
