According to officials, Assam Rifles under the command of Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) seized 536 bags of illegal areca nuts worth Rs 3 crores in the general region Zotlang, Champhai.
Based on precise information, an operation was carried out by a combined squad of Assam Rifles and the Customs Department, Champhai. The areca nuts are estimated to cost Rs 3 crore. According to an official statement, the seized consignment was turned over to the Customs Department in Champhai for further legal procedures.
The ongoing smuggling of illegal areca nuts is a significant source of concern in Mizoram. The Assam Rifles dubbed the “Sentinels of the Northeast,” have been effective in launching such operations against smuggling activities in Mizoram.
On March 24, this year, Assam Rifles recovered 70 bags of illegal areca nuts worth Rs 39.20 lakh in the general region of Tlangsam, Champhai.
