Union Minister Jayant Singh Chaudhary has encountered a strong reaction online after praising wrestler Vinesh Phogat for her historic achievement at the Paris Olympics 2024. Phogat, 29, made history by becoming the first Indian to reach the Olympic final in women’s wrestling, defeating Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzman 5-0 in the semi-final on August 6.
In his congratulatory post on X (formerly Twitter), Jayant Singh ChaudharY described Phogat as an example of “courage in the face of adversity” and wished her the best as she heads into the final. “She exemplifies the adage of courage in the face of adversity! Olympian, champion and now Olympic medal winner for India. All the best Vinesh Phogat,” Chaudhary wrote.
However, Chaudhary’s praise sparked sharp responses from users, including Prakash Jha, who retorted, “She is far more courageous and has more spine than you sir.” This comment referenced Phogat’s prominent role in a high-profile protest last year against former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who faces allegations of sexual harassment.
Minister Chaudhary’s response to Jha’s comment was, “Absolutely!”—suggesting agreement with the critique.
Phogat was a central figure in the wrestlers’ protest, which saw athletes sit-in at India Gate to demand justice. Her involvement in the protest and her subsequent performance at the Olympics have been seen as a powerful counter-narrative to her critics.
Phogat’s journey from the protests in Delhi to securing a silver medal in Paris underscores her resilience and determination. As she prepares for the final, her historic achievement has already solidified her place in Olympic history.
