PETA India’s Director, Poorva Joshipura, made a dramatic and outrageous announcement at Jantar Mantar on Thursday. Suspended from a hook wearing a skin-colored bodysuit covered in “blood,” she stood with the carcasses of a “pig” and “goat” in a highly evocative protest. The melodramatic show was held to commemorate 25 years of PETA India’s uncompromising struggle for animal rights and brought home the point that no living creature should be slaughtered for temporary human consumption.
A Call for Compassion and Ethical Decisions
Joshipura implored people to acknowledge their role in guarding animals. “Humans are one animal among many with the choice of whether to be bullies or protectors, and our ethical obligation is to leave animals in peace, not reduce them to pieces as they feel pain and fear, and value their lives,” she said. “PETA India is appealing to everyone to demonstrate compassion and respect and to adopt foods that cherish life.
She stressed that pigs and goats are smart, feeling creatures with distinct personalities—like the cats and dogs many love. Pigs dream, know their names, and are empathetic, while goats exhibit playful antics, solve problems, and possess great memories.
Revealing the Cruelty of the Meat, Egg, and Dairy Industries
The demonstration highlighted the cruel reality of the meat, egg, and dairy industries. Tens of millions of animals are kept under inhumane conditions of confinement and brutality within factory farms.
- The goats’ throats are cut while they are still alive.
- Pigs are pierced through the heart while screaming.
- Chickens are slaughtered right before their fellow birds.
- Fish are suffocated as they’re cut open while still alive.
- Egg-laying hens are kept in small cages where they cannot even spread their wings.
- Cows and buffaloes are so packed into transport trucks that their bones are broken before slaughter.
- Male chicks, not capable of laying eggs, are usually burned, drowned, crushed, or fed live to fish.
- Male calves, taken away from their mothers at birth, are starved, abandoned, or slaughtered for beef and leather.
Through this protest, PETA India reiterated its appeal for compassionate, plant-based options and the move toward cruelty-free living. The organization is still pushing for policies that guard animals and inspire consumers to be compassionate.
