A 21-year-old man was arrested in Delhi for allegedly opening a false social media profile in his ex-girlfriend’s name to tarnish her reputation, police said on Monday.

Victim Files Complaint at Cyber Police Station

Aman, a resident of Old Anarkali in Krishna Nagar, allegedly created a fake social media profile using the name and images of a 25-year-old woman. She resides in Civil Lines and works as an event manager.

According to the police, the victim, whose identity has been kept confidential, reported the issue at the cyber police station. She complained that someone had created a false account using her photos. The account handler then sent reminder requests to her friends and colleagues, asking for money under the pretense of being in trouble.

When her friends grew suspicious and questioned the account handler, the accused reportedly sent messages from the fake account, insulting both the complainant and her friends.

Police Investigation and Suspect Arrested

After receiving the complaint, a case was filed and an inquiry was undertaken.

“A team, during the technical investigation, sought details of the account from the platform, which helped identify two suspects,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Raja Banthia said in a statement.

When the complainant saw the profiles, she recognized one of them as Aman, her ex-boyfriend. Police traced his whereabouts to Krishna Nagar and arrested him.

Revenge Motive Confirmed After Arrest

Aman’s telephone and SIM card, which were used during the offence, were confiscated. Under interrogation, Aman, a Class 5 dropout and unemployed, owned up to causing the offence as a revenge after the complainant severed their three-year relationship.

He admitted to posing as her on the internet with the aim of ruining her reputation in the eyes of her friends.

“He created a fake profile to seek money from the victim’s friends. When his attempt failed, he began to abuse and defame the victim,” said the DCP, adding that further investigation is underway.
