Mahua Moitra’s LS expulsion sets stage for potent opposition alliance

The expulsion of Mahua Moitra from the Lok Sabha has emerged as a rallying point for the INDIA bloc, according to Trinamool on Friday. The issue has rejuvenated the alliance with “josh, unity, and aggression,” compensating for the lost momentum due to Congress’s electoral setbacks in Rajasthan, MP, and Chhattisgarh, claimed TMC.
Kunal Ghosh, the party spokesperson, asserted that the BJP would face consequences as the expulsion of Moitra has set the stage for a potent opposition alliance. The impact of this development is expected to be evident in the upcoming INDIA bloc meeting, as stated by Ghosh.
Addressing reporters in Kolkata immediately following Moitra’s expulsion, Ghosh highlighted the unified stance of Congress and other anti-BJP parties in supporting Trinamool Congress. He emphasized the necessity of a united front against the BJP, echoing Mamata Banerjee’s longstanding message.
Ghosh underscored the amplification of Trinamool Congress’s protest by INDIA partners led by Sonia Gandhi after Mahua’s expulsion. The collective pledge to combat the broader threat posed by the BJP is anticipated to manifest in the subsequent INDIA meeting, according to Ghosh.
The centrality of the Moitra issue as the common ground between Trinamool, Congress, and CPM in Bengal has been evident for some time.
Pradesh Congress president Adhir Chowdhury, a vocal proponent, criticized the government’s action, alleging baseless facts and a revengeful sentiment.
CPM has also been vocal on the matter, with central committee member Sujan Chakraborty deeming it a “black day” for Parliament.
He characterized the action against Moitra as “over activeness,” citing it as a manifestation of BJP’s use of its brute majority in the Lok Sabha.
In response to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla drawing parallels to the expulsion of lawmakers during UPA’s tenure, TMC dismissed the comparison. Ghosh argued that the context was entirely different, emphasizing that the previous expulsions were based on evidence of cash acceptance captured on camera, unlike Moitra’s case, which he deemed
illegal.
