Over 1.65 million devotees had taken a holy dip in the Triveni Sangam by 4 AM on Monday, marking the third ‘Amrit Snan’ on the occasion of Basant Panchami. This ritual is part of the ongoing Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj.

The sacred bathing began with Naga Sadhus taking the first plunge. According to the Maha Kumbh administration, “Amrit Snan started on the Ghats by Naga Sadhus. With faith and devotion, the banks of Triveni are witnessing the ancient Indian culture and traditions.”

Overwhelming Participation

Since the Maha Kumbh Mela began on January 13, more than 340 million (34 crore) devotees have participated in the ritual. Moreover, over 1 million Kalpwasis, or devotees observing month-long austerities, have added to the spiritual fervor.

Devotees Gather for Basant Panchami

In the early hours of Monday, a large number of devotees gathered to take a holy dip in the Ganga and offer prayers to Maa Saraswati. At the same time, Prayagraj Junction saw a massive influx of pilgrims, as the city prepared for the Amrit Snan on the auspicious day of Basant Panchami.

Significance of Basant Panchami

Basant Panchami is an important festival that marks the start of spring and falls on the fifth day of Magha. Additionally, it signals the beginning of Holi preparations, which will take place forty days later. During this festival, Hindus honor Maa Saraswati, the goddess of learning, music, and the arts.

Security and Safety Measures

As part of the preparations, Vivek Chaturvedi, Additional Mela Adhikari, stated, “Today is the ‘Amrit Snan’ on the occasion of Basant Panchami, and the procession of Mahanirvani Akhara and Shri Shambhu Panchayati Atal Akhara is heading towards the Sangam ghat. Proper arrangements have been made for the safety of devotees.”

Efficient Crowd Control

Meanwhile, the Kumbh Command and Control Centre is closely monitoring 25 sectors, 30 pontoon bridges, and sensitive barricades. Additionally, 3,000 CCTV cameras have been set up to ensure the safety of the pilgrims.

A Grand Event

The Maha Kumbh 2025 commenced on January 13 and will continue until February 26. So far, it has attracted millions of devotees from around the world, and it is expected to break records for attendance and participation.
