The second stage of Lok Sabha elections on Friday witnessed a turnout of nearly 61 percent by 7 pm, marking completion of voting in 14 states and union territories. Peaceful polling was observed, notably in 102 villages in the Bastar division experiencing Lok Sabha elections for the first time. Across 88 constituencies in 13 states and union territories, voting commenced at 7 am for the 2024 general elections.
Despite sweltering conditions, voters from various demographics, including newlyweds, senior citizens, tribals, IT professionals, persons with disabilities, women, and youngsters, showed enthusiasm, forming queues at polling stations. Officials confirmed smooth and peaceful polling nationwide, recording a turnout of 60.96 percent by 7 pm. The Election Commission ensured strict security measures throughout the process, fostering a safe environment for voters.
In certain Bihar polling stations, polling time was extended till 6 pm to accommodate voters in hot weather, with arrangements such as canopies, drinking water, medical aid, and fans provided for comfort. Traditional attire added color to the electoral spirit, with voters in Sikar, Rajasthan, and polling staff in Varuna constituency, Karnataka, showcasing cultural pride.
Notably, 46 villages in Bastar and Kanker parliamentary constituencies in Chhattisgarh had polling booths set up for the first time in Lok Sabha elections, with a total of 102 new polling stations established across these areas. Special efforts were made to facilitate voting for various groups, including the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTGs), elderly, youth, first-time voters, women, and transgender individuals.
Cricket icons Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid, and Javagal Srinath were among those seen exercising their franchise in Bengaluru, emphasizing the importance of youth participation in the electoral process. The first phase of Lok Sabha polls took place on April 19, with elections scheduled across seven phases until June 1, and vote counting set for June 4.
