Kuno National Park Celebrates New Additions as Cheetah Veera Gives Birth to Two Cubs

Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh added two cubs to the cheetah family as the female cheetah ‘Veera’ gave birth to two healthy cubs on Tuesday. This brings the number of cheetahs in the park, including cubs, to 26.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has shared the news on social media, extending his greetings to the state’s residents and commending all of the officers, veterinarians, and field staff involved in Project Cheetah, as well as expressing joy over the state’s growing cheetah population.

“Kuno National Park echoed again with the shrieks of little cheetahs. Two cheetah cubs mark their entry in Madhya Pradesh’s ‘Jungle Book’. I am very happy to share the information that the number of cheetahs is continuously increasing in Madhya Pradesh. Today, a female cheetah Veera gave birth to 2 little cubs. We welcome cheetah cubs on the land of Madhya Pradesh, and I extend my greetings to the people of the state on the arrival of these little cubs,” CM Yadav wrote in a post on X.

However, the Chief Minister also pointed out how the revival of cheetahs is even sustaining tourism and giving employment to the local population in the state.

“I would like to extend my felicitation to all the officials, veterinarians, and field staff associated with the project for their relentless efforts that have resulted in Madhya Pradesh being termed the ‘Land of Cheetahs.’ The increasing number of cheetahs in the state is further boosting tourism and opening up avenues for more jobs. We will continue our work towards conservation, improvement, and restoration of not only cheetahs but all wildlife here,” he said.

With the birth of these two cubs, there are 12 adult cheetahs and 14 cubs housed at Kuno National Park.

Kuno National Park: India’s Historic Conservation Effort

Project Cheetah was launched to restore the species in India after cheetahs were declared extinct in the country, the world’s first intercontinental translocation of cheetahs introduced 20 individuals to Kuno National Park-eight from Namibia in September 2022 and 12 from South Africa in February 2023.

Since their arrival, the project has faced many setbacks, such as the deaths of eight adult cheetahs—three females and five males. But the breeding effort is promising with 17 cubs born in India, of which 12 survived. The total number of cheetahs in Kuno National Park now stands at 26 after Veera gave birth to two more cubs.

This remains the most significant aspect of wildlife preservation, which gives the species survival while it caters to the tourism industry, as well as ecological balance for Madhya Pradesh.
