Kolkata police arrests professor for sending threat letter to Jadavpur University registrar

On Sunday, Kolkata Police apprehended Rana Roy, who had recently issued a threat letter to Jadavpur University Registrar Snehamanju Basu.

An officer said Roy was apprehended at a hotel in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Snehamanju Basu, the registrar at JU, recently got a threat letter regarding the arrest of a former student in connection with the death of an undergraduate student in a ragging incident at the university dormitory.

Rana Roy, on the other hand, was detained in a separate case. The arrest was made on the basis of a written complaint filed by a woman from Kolkata’s Belgachia neighborhood, according to the police.

According to the police officials, “The woman in her complaint has alleged that from 2019 until August 2023, the accused person (Rana Roy) stalked the complainant lady, made indecent gestures by exhibiting his private parts, insulted her modesty by hurling filthy expletives at her, proposed to her indecently by sending her a letter, and finally outraged her modesty on August 17, 2023, by hugging her with malafide intention inside the LIG Housing.

Moreover, the complainant made an allegation of impersonation and cheating against the accused person, who, by exhibiting a board written “WBES Gr-A, Govt of West Bengal, By Order” in his private car, impersonated himself as a superior officer of the State government.”

As per sources, Rana Roy is a professor at a college in Cooch Behar.
