A 20-year-old second-year medical student from Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was allegedly found hanging in her room at the ESI quarters in Kamarhati, as reported by The Times of India. She had been living with her mother, a doctor at the local ESI hospital. According to police sources, the student may have been struggling with depression.
The incident came to light when her mother was unable to reach her despite several attempts. Concerned, the mother went to her daughter’s room in the hospital quarters.
“Despite repeated calls, there was no response from her. Eventually, her mother broke open the door and found her hanging. She was rushed to the hospital, where she was declared dead,” The Times of India quoted a senior police officer of the Barrackpore Commissionerate.
No suicide note was found, the report added.
The medical student was rushed to the hospital immediately but was declared dead, as reported by The Telegraph.
Unnatural death
The deceased’s father, a senior official at a nationalized bank, is stationed in Mumbai, according to the report.
The police have initiated an unnatural death investigation into the incident. The body has been sent for a postmortem at the College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital. RG Kar Hospital officials mentioned that the student was generally quiet, as per the Times of India report.
RG Kar rape-murder case
The incident comes just days after Sanjay Roy, a convict in the high-profile rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Sealdah court in Kolkata.
On January 20, the civil and criminal court in Sealdah found Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
The post-graduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 last year, sparking nationwide outrage.
The Calcutta High Court had transferred the investigation into the case to the CBI.
However, the doctor’s parents have expressed dissatisfaction, alleging that the investigation was conducted half-heartedly and that other culprits involved in the crime were protected.
