Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder: Suspect Slept At Home, Police Uncover Blood Evidence

The man accused of raping and murdering a doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata and Hospital reportedly returned home after the alleged crime and slept for a few hours, according to police statements on Sunday. He later attempted to destroy evidence by washing his clothes.

Despite his efforts, investigators found bloodstains on the accused’s shoes. The suspect, a civic volunteer, had no professional ties to the hospital but frequently visited the premises.

The victim, a post-graduate trainee doctor, was discovered dead in a seminar hall of the hospital on Friday morning. Colleagues reported that she had gone to the hall to rest after having her meal. The horrific crime is believed to have occurred between 3 am and 6 am.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal visited the hospital for the second time in three days on Sunday, holding discussions with representatives of the junior doctors who were protesting the incident.

“After committing the crime, the suspect returned to his residence and slept until late Friday morning. Upon waking, he attempted to eliminate evidence by washing the clothes worn during the crime. However, bloodstained shoes were recovered during a search,” an officer stated, according to PTI.

Autopsy Report Findings
The initial autopsy report revealed that the victim suffered severe injuries, with bleeding observed from her eyes, mouth, and private parts. Additional injuries were found on her leg, neck, hand, and lips.

There is also circumstantial evidence suggesting the possibility that the doctor may have been murdered before the sexual assault occurred, a police officer indicated.

The police have handed over the autopsy report to the victim’s parents and held a productive meeting with the medical students, who had been protesting the incident. Following the meeting, an assistant police officer stationed at the hospital was removed from duty, as per the students’ demands.

In response to the incident, hospital authorities have terminated the contracts of two security personnel who were on duty in the emergency ward during the crime for failing to perform their responsibilities.
