Khap mahapanchayat calls meeting as Wrestlers’ protest continues

The country’s top wrestlers have been protesting at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi for nearly a month now, demanding action in the sexual harassment case against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

As their 15-day deadline to arrest the wrestling body chief expires on Sunday, they have issued a warning that their next course of action in the matter could be revealed today.

The wrestlers who have been protesting since April 23 have set May 21 as the deadline for their next move. They stated that they will follow the decision of a ‘mahapanchayat’ in Mehem Chaubisi (a cluster of 24 villages) khap in Haryana’s Rohtak district, in which community leaders and farmers’ organizations are expected to participate.

“The decision our elders make (on Sunday) could be significant, and it may not be in the best interests of the country.” “It could be detrimental to the country,” said Asian Games gold medalist Vinesh Phogat during a press conference at Jantar Mantar.

The wrestlers leading the agitation, Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia, attempted to attend an IPL game at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday in order to gain support for their protests.

However, according to their claims, the Delhi police denied them entry. “…Despite the fact that we had no protest signs, posters, or banners, we were turned back.”

We want Dhoni to join us in our fight for justice. “No active cricketer has yet spoken out,” Punia stated. The three were dressed in t-shirts with the slogan ‘I Support Wrestlers’ on them.
