Kamal Nath might resign as Madhya Pradesh Congress Chief

There is speculation that former Chief Minister Kamal Nath might resign from the post of party head in Madhya Pradesh after the loss of the assembly poll. He will meet Congress Party President Mallikarjun Kherge in Delhi on Wednesday, December 6th.

Yesterday, he also called a meeting of all candidates to review factors that led to the party’s defeat in the 2023 assembly elections in a state they were sure of winning. After the meeting, he said, “Everyone gave their views; I have asked them to prepare a report and submit it to me.”

He also spoke to Rahul Gandhi over the phone after the massive defeat in the assembly elections. Earlier on Sunday, addressing a press conference during the final stage of counting, Nath said, “We accept the mandate of Madhya Pradesh’s voters in this democratic contest. We will fulfil the role of the opposition.”

An internal source from the Congress Party said that Kamal Nath will meet party president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday in a separate meeting and later decide whether he wants to continue as Madhya Pradesh Congress Chief or not.

Adding to this, he said that the Congress leadership is also upset over his remarks against many leaders of the INDIA bloc, including Samajwadi Party (SP) Chief Akhilesh Yadav and Janta Dal United (JDU) supremo Nitish Kumar, over seat sharing in the state. The sources also said that the Congress high command is also reportedly upset over Kamal Nath not meeting with party leaders and workers.

The result of the Madhya Pradesh assembly election shows that Congress lost the election miserably, and the BJP won 163 seats out of 230, more than double the Congress tally of 66.
