On Thursday, Madhya Pradesh cabinet minister and senior BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya made a very controversial statement about women’s clothing at a public event, and the video of his comments provided a firestorm of political and social reactions at the very next moment. He was caught on camera saying that he would never take selfies with girls wearing “revealing clothes” and that women were his goddesses if they dressed like that.
Kaiash Vijayvargiya Spreads Misogynistic Message
“Mujhe kam kapde wali ladki acchi nahi lagti” (I don’t like women or girls who wear revealing clothes), Vijayvargiya said to an audience that was laughing and clapping his misogynistic statement.

He also figuratively stated his place of view about short speeches with the dress length, connecting the proverb and an example of short dresses.
“Look, there is a western saying which is not good, but this saying is discussed a lot in foreign countries… It is said there [abroad] that just as a girl wearing less clothing is beautiful, similarly, a leader giving a short speech is also very good. There is such a saying in foreign countries, but I do not follow it.”
Social Media Backlash and Political Reactions
Such remarks created ample backlash over social media and got labeled “misogynistic” and “regressive,” drawing a sharp critique from not only opposition parties but also from the girls’ and women’s rights groups.
Madhya Pradesh Women’s Congress president Vibha Patel pointed out that the minister was at it again. She said, “Kailash Vijayvargiya finds himself secluded in his party, and that is why he gives such statements to attract the attention of everyone. I would like to tell the BJP leadership that they should warn Kailash Vijayvargiya. It has become his habit to comment on the clothes of women and girls. You can not come into the limelight by commenting on the clothes of women, you should change your behaviour.”
A Pattern of Controversial Statements
This case is not the first one in which Kailash Vijayvargiya has gotten into trouble because of his words. He has been consistently making provocative statements about women, and he even tries to prove his points by quoting cultural or moral issues.
Although there has been a lot of noise around the issue, the BJP minister hasn’t clarified his position or apologized so far.
