The Kashmir Valley is gradually resuming routine life. Schools in J&K resumed on May 13, 2025, after being closed for three weeks. The schools were shut following the fatal April 22 Pahalgam attack and India’s tough military response under Operation Sindoor.
As students are back in school, tension still prevails in the region. Many civilian flights to and from border regions continue to be suspended in the face of security warnings and the threat of more retaliatory action from the other side.

Back to Classrooms, But Under Surveillance
Students stepped back into schools under close security. Attendance was sporadic. While some parents showed relief, others were reluctant to send their kids, concerned about further upsets. Local authorities ensured patrol and rapid response teams were functional throughout school areas.
Some schools even organized mock exercises to comfort students and teachers.
Flights Halted as Precaution
Civilian air traffic over border-facing regions such as Jammu, Poonch, and Rajouri remained grounded. Security reasons were cited by authorities. Intelligence agencies issued alerts against potential aerial intrusions or attempts to disrupt civilian infrastructure.
Helicopter services to border regions were also suspended temporarily. The Indian Air Force was kept on high alert status, prepared to intercept threats.
Operation Sindoor Still Echoes
The impact of Operation Sindoor still resonates in the area. While the military was successful, security organs are still jumpy. Vigilance continues to be stringent, particularly at borders with Pakistan. India’s intelligence agencies are still picking up chatter in communication that implies that Pakistan-based units may orchestrate further attacks.
Even in fear, life in J&K begins to evidence resilience. The markets reopened, public transport became operational, and tourists trickled back. Authorities pointed out that the reopening of schools was an act of defiance against terror and fear.
India’s military offensive may have unnerved the adversary, but attention now turns towards defending peace in the homefront.
