In a spectacular exhibition of emergency preparedness, Vijay Chowk and major buildings on Raisina Hill, including the Indian Parliament, went dark on May 7 as part of a nationwide mock drill on a massive scale called “Operation Abhyas.” This synchronized exercise, directed by the Ministry of Home Affairs, was carried out across 244 civil defence districts of India.

Delhi blackout replicated an air attack situation with sirens blaring and agencies initiating a prompt response. Delhi Police, Civil Defence, CISF, and other security personnel took part in the drill, conducting evacuation drills and emergency procedures as part of an actual-time readiness test.

A top official clarified, “Operation Abhyas was conceived to test inter-agency coordination and ensure that procedures are executed effectively under stress.” The simulation drill was meant to detect gaps in response and enhance coordination among various security and rescue departments.

These regular drills are indispensable in making the authorities ready to react promptly and efficiently in real emergencies, like terror attacks or natural disasters. Footage of the abrupt blackout soon went viral, generating curiosity and faith among the public.

What is a Mock Drill?

A mock drill is an imaginary training exercise that is specifically intended to prepare people and agencies for actual emergencies. By rehearsal of response mechanisms in a secured environment, it helps ensure that participants are familiar with the procedures and can react effectively when a real crisis occurs. Thus, it serves as an essential tool in improving preparedness and testing the efficiency of emergency protocols.
