Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter jets scrambled from Jammu Airport on Thursday evening, May 8, after Pakistan launched a coordinated missile and drone attack targeting key locations in Jammu. The Indian Army immediately activated Operation Sindoor, a full-scale counter-offensive aimed at dismantling terror bases and enemy infrastructure across the border.
Pakistan Launches Coordinated Drone and Missile Strike
According to top security officials, Pakistan triggered the escalation around 6:45 PM by launching multiple drones across the International Border. Simultaneously, it fired eight missiles aimed at strategic civilian and defence hubs including Jammu Civil Airport, Samba, RS Pura, and Arnia.
The Indian Air Force swiftly activated the S-400 air defence system, which intercepted and destroyed all eight missiles mid-air. Air defence teams also tracked the drones, which were equipped for surveillance and possible low-grade payload delivery. Indian security units either shot down the drones or forced them to retreat.
India Launches Precision Strikes Under Operation Sindoor
Within minutes of the attack, Indian fighter jets roared into the skies from Jammu Airport. Local residents heard the thunderous sound of jets conducting sorties over border regions. Military sources confirmed that these aircraft carried out precision strikes on terror camps and missile launch pads inside Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Defence officials emphasized that Operation Sindoor is not symbolic. It’s a calculated military response designed to cripple Pakistan’s terror infrastructure and send a clear warning against future provocations.
Fallout from the Pahalgam Terror Attack
The latest escalation comes days after the terror attack in Pahalgam, where militants ambushed a tourist vehicle and selectively opened fire based on passengers’ religion. The attack killed several civilians and reignited national outrage against cross-border terrorism.
Analysts suggest Pakistan’s drone and missile offensive could be a tactical distraction, aimed at shifting global focus away from its alleged involvement in supporting terror groups operating in Jammu and Kashmir.
Region on High Alert
Authorities have suspended all civilian flights at Jammu Airport. Security forces remain on high alert across Jammu, Punjab, and other northern regions. With fighter jets continuing air patrols and precision strikes, the situation remains tense, and further developments are anticipated.
