The Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) in Chittagong has stopped processing visa applications indefinitely due to rising unrest in Bangladesh. This step was taken as security threats around the Indian mission increased. Indian officials said the centre will reopen only after the situation improves.
Why was the Visa Centre Closed?
India’s visa services at the Chittagong centre were halted from December 21. The IVAC said the decision came after security incidents around the Indian Assistant High Commission (AHCI) in the port city.
“Due to the recent security incident at AHCI Chattogram, Indian visa operations at IVAC Chattogram will remain suspended until further notice,” the official IVAC notice stated. Officials added that the visa centre will remain shut until a fresh review of security conditions, and no reopening date has been set.
What Triggered the Unrest?
The suspension follows nationwide protests after the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent youth leader and activist. Hadi was shot earlier this month and died while receiving treatment abroad. His death sparked angry demonstrations in several cities, including Dhaka and Chittagong.
Protesters gathered near diplomatic missions and government buildings, demanding justice and accountability. Some demonstrations turned violent, leading to clashes with law enforcement.
Security Situation Around Indian Missions
Security forces have tightened protection around Indian diplomatic offices and visa centres. Additional police and military personnel were deployed near the Indian Assistant High Commission to prevent further escalation. The move aimed to ensure the safety of staff and visitors amid threats of more protests.
It was reported that enhanced security measures were introduced not only in Chittagong but also in Sylhet, where tensions have increased following the announcement of planned rallies near the mission.
Impact on Visa Applicants
The suspension means applicants with visas or appointments in Chittagong face delays. IVAC has not given a clear timeline for when applications and processing will resume. Applicants are being advised to wait for new scheduling information from the authorities.
Indian authorities are closely monitoring the situation to decide when services can safely restart. No injuries to mission staff have been confirmed, but authorities say the decision is precautionary.
Political Background
The protests and unrest occur in a volatile political climate. Bangladesh has seen a series of nationwide demonstrations following leadership changes and rising public discontent. The death of a key political figure at this moment has added fuel to ongoing tensions.
The situation has also drawn attention to growing border concerns and regional stability, with authorities in neighbouring countries watching closely as events unfold.
What Comes Next?
For now, the IVAC in Chittagong will stay closed until authorities assess conditions on the ground. Travellers and visa seekers are advised to follow official announcements for updates on safe operations and reopening schedules.
