India Reports 6 Covid-19 Deaths in a Day; Active Cases Climb to 7,121

India’s active Covid-19 cases have climbed to 7,121 after 306 new infections were reported in the last 24 hours, according to data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Wednesday. During the same period, six more people lost their lives due to the virus.

Among the six fatalities, three were from Kerala, two from Karnataka, and one from Maharashtra. One of the victims was a 43-year-old man with a weakened immune system. The others were older people individuals who had chronic and respiratory conditions, making them more vulnerable.

New Variants Fueling the Surge

The recent increase in Covid-19 cases is linked to emerging virus variants. These include LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and the newly detected NB.1.8.1 subvariant. These strains are contributing to the current spike in infections across several parts of the country.

State-Wise Covid-19 Breakdown

Kerala remains the worst-hit state, with 2,223 active cases. It also recorded the highest number of new infections in the past 24 hours at 170. Gujarat came next with 114 fresh cases, raising its active count to 1,223. Delhi saw a rise as well, reporting 66 new cases and 757 active ones overall.

Here’s a quick snapshot of major states:

State Active Cases New Cases (Last 24 Hours) Deaths (Last 24 Hours)
Kerala 2,223 +170 3
Maharashtra 615 +2 1

Experts Call for Targeted Protection, Not Mass Boosters

Medical experts are advising against launching another mass booster vaccination drive. Instead, they recommend prioritizing high-risk individuals—particularly the older people with chronic diseases, and those with compromised immune systems.

Experts pointed out that most people now have some level of hybrid immunity due to prior infections and vaccination. Hence, extra booster doses are not required for the general population at this time.

“Widespread hybrid immunity makes mass boosters unnecessary,” health experts noted. However, they emphasized the continued importance of Covid-appropriate behavior such as wearing masks, hand hygiene, and avoiding crowded spaces.

Government Advisories and Preventive Measures

In response to the rising number of cases, the central government has issued fresh advisories to all states and union territories. These guidelines emphasize staying alert and prepared for any potential surge.

Doctors have urged people to be cautious and differentiate between Covid-19 and other common seasonal illnesses that cause similar symptoms like fever, tiredness, and respiratory issues.

Vulnerable groups—especially older adults and those with pre-existing medical problems—are being advised to seek medical help promptly if symptoms arise or worsen.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) also echoed this sentiment, urging everyone to follow preventive steps like wearing masks and maintaining personal hygiene to prevent further spread.
