India, Philippines Strengthen Ties with Landmark Strategic Partnership

India and the Philippines elevate ties to a strategic partnership, with defence, diplomacy, and Indo-Pacific peace at the core.

India and the Philippines on Tuesday formally elevated their bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership, marking a major diplomatic milestone. PM Narendra Modi and President Ferdinand R Marcos Jr. held comprehensive talks in New Delhi, reinforcing mutual trust, deepening defence ties, and promote peace in the Indo-Pacific region. 

The two leaders also celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations, releasing a commemorative postage stamp, with a focus on shared values and a collective future, both nations committed to a rules-based regional order and stronger cooperation under India’s Act East Policy and MAHASAGAR vision.

Strengthening Defense and Mutual Trust

Prime Minister Modi called the enhanced defense cooperation a symbol of deep mutual trust between the two democracies where the strategic partnership includes a detailed action plan aimed at converting this vision into real-world outcomes. Both nations see defense as a critical area of collaboration, especially in light of increasing maritime tensions in the Indo-Pacific.

Celebrating 75 Years of Diplomatic Ties

Where celebrations marks 75 years of diplomatic relations, Modi and Marcos Jr. jointly released a commemorative postage stamp and this act not only honored the past but also set the tone for a future-oriented partnership and highlighted the depth of historical ties and the desire to strengthen bonds for the coming decades.

Standing United Against Terrorism

Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude to the Philippine government for condemning the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 innocent lives and he acknowledged the Philippines' firm support in the fight against terrorism and praised the country’s solidarity with India during critical times.

Shared Vision for Indo-Pacific Peace

Both leaders underscored their commitment to peace, prosperity, and a rules-based international order in the Indo-Pacific where Modi reaffirmed India’s support for freedom of navigation and respect for international laws. He described the Philippines as a key partner in India’s Act East Policy and its broader MAHASAGAR vision.
