In a significant development for India’s defence forces, India and France on Monday signed an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) for the procurement of 26 Rafale fighter jets for the Indian Navy.
The landmark deal includes 22 single-seat Rafale M aircraft and 4 twin-seat Rafale D aircraft. In addition to the aircraft, the agreement covers comprehensive support, including training programs, simulators, weapons systems, and a five-year Performance-Based Logistics (PBL) support package, according to the Embassy of France in India.
The agreement also includes the provision of additional equipment for the Indian Air Force’s existing Rafale fleet, further strengthening India’s air capabilities.
A Ceremony Marking Stronger Ties
The signing ceremony was jointly presided over by Thierry Mathou, France’s Ambassador to India, and Rajesh Kumar, India’s Defence Secretary. Senior military officials, industry leaders, and defence representatives from both nations were present at the event.
Additional supporting agreements were signed between the two governments and with industry partners, deepening the strategic and industrial cooperation between France and India.
Delivery Timeline and Training
Manufactured by Dassault Aviation, the Rafale M is a battle-proven carrier-based combat aircraft. According to the agreement, deliveries will start in 2028 and are expected to be completed by 2030. Training for the Indian Navy’s aircrew will take place in both India and France.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Thierry Mathou said,
“Today’s agreement marks a significant new milestone in the strategic partnership between France and India. It reflects deep mutual trust and the evolving strength of our defence cooperation.”
He further emphasized that the deal opens new industrial and strategic horizons for both nations.
This major deal marks another key step in the growing India-France strategic partnership, strengthening India’s defence readiness and boosting Make in India collaborations in the aerospace sector.
