About BRICS and Its Global Role

BRICS, which stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, represents a major group of emerging economies. Originally formed as BRIC in 2006, the group added South Africa in 2010. Together, BRICS countries represent 41% of the global population, account for 24% of the world’s GDP, and hold a 16% share in global trade.

BRICS has evolved to focus on three major areas:

  • Political and security cooperation
  • Economic and financial collaboration
  • Cultural and people-to-people exchanges

India’s active participation in the BRICS Transport Ministers’ Meet underscores its role in global development and infrastructure leadership.
