India and UK Hold High-Level Talks to Strengthen Strategic Ties for the Next Decade

India and the United Kingdom took a major step forward in strengthening their diplomatic and strategic ties during the annual Foreign Office Consultations held in New Delhi. Sir Oliver Robbins, Permanent Under-Secretary at the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, met with India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri to assess progress under the UK-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

This visit marks a significant chapter in bilateral relations, with both sides expressing satisfaction over major breakthroughs since the last consultations held in London. A major highlight was the conclusion of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement and the Double Contribution Convention, which are expected to boost economic cooperation and investment.

Vision for the Next Decade

During the meeting, both officials discussed how to implement the shared vision of the two prime ministers for an ambitious partnership that spans the next ten years. Economic growth was identified as a top priority, with both nations reaffirming their commitment to strengthening trade and investment ties.

Another key outcome of the talks was the launch of the inaugural Strategic Exports and Technology Cooperation Dialogue. This new dialogue is designed to build mutual understanding in areas such as defence and high-end technology, which are becoming increasingly central to the India-UK relationship.

Broader Cooperation in Critical Sectors

In addition to trade and technology, the two countries discussed ways to deepen cooperation in a wide range of sectors. These included defence and security, counter-terrorism, innovation, green energy, climate change, health, education, and people-to-people connections.

Sir Oliver Robbins stated that he was pleased to be in India to help advance what he described as one of the UK’s most vital global partnerships. He emphasized the shared ambition between the two governments to elevate this relationship to greater heights, especially in an increasingly complex global environment.

Commitment to Global Security and Shared Values

The Foreign Secretary also conveyed India’s appreciation for the UK’s continued solidarity in the global fight against terrorism. Both sides agreed that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership reflects a strong commitment to democracy, peace, and shared prosperity.

Sir Oliver is also scheduled to meet other Indian officials during his visit, including those responsible for G20 coordination and home affairs. These meetings aim to further strengthen bilateral cooperation on key international and domestic matters of mutual interest.

As both nations navigate new global challenges, the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership continues to evolve, offering vast opportunities for growth, innovation, and shared leadership on global issues.
