India Achieves Record Defense Production, 90% Surge in 5 Years

India achieved a historic Rs. 1.50 lakh crore defence production in FY 2024-25, up 90% in five years, fueled by policy reforms, indigenisation, and the Aatmanirbhar Bharat push, with strong contributions from both public and private sectors.

In the middle of ongoing conflicts and global uncertainties, Indian defense minister, Rajnath Singh announced that the country’s yearly defense production has reached at Rs. 1,50,590 crore in the financial year 2024-25. 

The marks and 18% rise in comparison to the last years output. It also showcases an impressive 90% increase from financial year 2019-20 when the figure stood at only Rs. 79, 70071 zero crore.

Rajnath Singh Praises on Social Media

Rajnath Singh, share the news on social media platform X . He wrote, “I commend the collective efforts of Department of Defense Production and all stakeholders, i.e. DPSUs, public sector manufacturers, and the private industry, in achieving this landmark. This upward trajectory is a clear indicator of India’s strengthening defense industrial base.”

Public and Private Sector Contributions

According to the government data, the defense public sector undertakings and other PSU contributed about 77% of the total output. On the other hand, the private sector accounted for 23%. The letter reflects a 2% rise as compared to the previous years, Highlighting its growing role in India’s defense ecosystem.

In the financial year 2024-25, the production by DPSU increased by 16%, and the private sector manufacturing stands tall at 28%. This indicates a balance growth across all sectors.

The ministry of defense stated that this progress is due to policy reforms, better ease of doing business, and strategic push for indigenization over the past decade.

PM Modi’s Bharat initiative aims to reduce reliance on imports and strengthen the domestic manufacturing. It also works towards developing a robust defence industrial base.
