The Indian government has terminated the services of Dr Krishnamurthy Subramaniam as the Executive Director (India) at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) with immediate effect. The decision was confirmed through an official order issued on April 30.
Dr Subramaniam, who served as India’s youngest Chief Economic Advisor from 2018 to 2022, took over the IMF role in November 2022. His sudden removal comes as a surprise, with no official reason cited for the termination.
The government notice stated, “The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved termination of Dr Krishnamurthy Subramanian as Executive Director (India) at the International Monetary Fund with immediate effect.”
His tenure at the IMF was expected to last three years, and his early exit has sparked speculation about internal disagreements or administrative decisions within the finance ministry.
Dr Subramaniam had gained recognition for his strong economic views and policy contributions during his time as Chief Economic Advisor. His removal now raises questions about the next steps for India’s representation at the IMF.
The government has not yet announced a replacement for the post. Observers are keen to see who will be appointed next, especially at a time when global economic engagement is crucial for India.
