The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in Maharashtra, Kerala, and Konkan Goa on Tuesday, July 16. Red alerts have been issued in several areas due to anticipated downpours. Light rain is also expected to persist in parts of Delhi-NCR throughout the week.
According to the IMD, the monsoon is now moving southwards, with coastal regions of Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Konkan Goa likely to receive over 20 cm of rainfall in the coming days. Red alerts have been issued for Raigad in Maharashtra and Malappuram, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts in Kerala, while several other districts have been placed under orange alerts.
In Maharashtra, flooding occurred in Thane’s Bhiwandi area as the Kamwari River overflowed, causing water to enter homes and displacing many residents in coastal areas like Sultania Gali.
The IMD has also issued a red alert for south interior and coastal Karnataka for July 16, where heavy rains have already caused flooding in villages like Araga, Chendia, Iduru, and Toduru, and damage to infrastructure in Kodagu district due to thunderstorms.
Dr. Naresh Kumar, an IMD scientist, emphasized the downward shift of the monsoon and highlighted ongoing alerts for the southern regions, contrasting with the expectation of light to moderate rainfall in Delhi-NCR without any alerts issued.
The persistent heavy rains across various states have led to flooding and significant disruptions in daily life, impacting communities with loss of lives and property.
