IMD Alert: Mumbai, Thane, Raigad Warned For Severe Waterlogging

The weather forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts moderate to heavy rainfall in Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad in the upcoming three to four hours. A red alert has been declared for Sindhudurg district, with an orange alert in place for Ratnagiri district.

IMD announced on X, “Southwest Monsoon has advanced into some more parts of the central Arabian Sea, south Maharashtra, Telangana, and some parts of south Chhattisgarh and south Odisha, and some more parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh today, 8 June 2024.”

Today morning, Mumbai and Thane witnessed rainfall after heavy downpours on Saturday night, resulting in severe waterlogging in different parts. These early monsoon showers have led to notable disruptions like flooded streets and traffic congestion, with forecasts indicating more intense monsoon rains in the next 48 hours. Residents have extensively shared images and videos of the waterlogged streets and traffic snarls on social media platforms.

The IMD stated, “Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and moderate to heavy spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Mumbai, Thane, Raigad during next 3-4 hours. Take precautions while moving out.”

The Southwest Monsoon is anticipated to progress into more areas of the central Arabian Sea, extending its impact to Maharashtra (including Mumbai) and Telangana over the next 2-3 days under favorable conditions.

In a connected development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led a meeting on Sunday to assess the current heatwave situation and make arrangements for the upcoming monsoon season.

It’s worth mentioning that this year’s monsoon has started two days earlier than usual, as the usual onset date is June 1. Kerala has already witnessed widespread pre-monsoon showers.
