The Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully conducted a major flypast and landing drill on the Ganga Expressway in Uttar Pradesh. The operation took place on a newly constructed 3.5-kilometre-long airstrip in Shahjahanpur, a key section of the upcoming expressway.
Modern Jets Prove Battle-Readiness
During the exercise, the IAF used advanced aircraft such as Rafale, Jaguar, and Mirage jets. These fighter planes performed both take-offs and landings. The aim was to test how the Air Force can operate under pressure in emergency conditions. This drill helped evaluate if the expressway could work as a backup runway during war or a national crisis.
India’s First Airstrip for Day and Night Jet Operations
A statement released on Thursday highlighted the uniqueness of this airstrip. It stated, “This will be the first airstrip in the country designed to support day and night landings of fighter aircraft, making it a strategic asset for defence preparedness. It will also serve as the Air Force’s training and rehearsal base.” This feature makes the Ganga Expressway an important part of India’s defence strategy.
CCTV Surveillance Ensures Full Security
To protect the area, officials installed about 250 CCTV cameras along both sides of the airstrip. Before the air show, the Indian Air Force took over the airstrip’s control. Its teams worked closely with the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) to prepare the site.
Day and Night Trials Push Limits
The drill is happening in two phases—day and night. Local authorities confirmed that the night session aims to test landing abilities after dark. Fighter jets are flying just one meter above ground and performing full landing and take-off operations. The same sequence will take place again from 7 PM to 10 PM.
First Expressway in India to Allow Night Landings
The Ganga Expressway is now the first in India—and in Uttar Pradesh—to support night jet landings. This major upgrade will help the Indian Air Force carry out missions anytime, day or night. It boosts their ability to respond quickly in all conditions.
Blending Infrastructure with National Defence
This operation marks a key step in strengthening India’s defence. By using a civilian expressway for military training, India is combining infrastructure growth with national security. In short, this exercise shows how India is improving its military strength with smart planning and strong partnerships.
