HMPV Cases Surge in India: Over 15 Infections Reported Across States

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) has been found in more than 15 cases in different parts of India this season. Health authorities are concerned about the situation. As the virus spreads, experts recommend preventive measures and urge people to be vigilant.

Cases Reported in Multiple States

The cases of HMPV have gradually increased over the last one year in India. Cases have been reported from three places in Puducherry and five places in Gujarat. Assam has reported its first case of this season on Monday. Even though the HMPV is not a new virus, the increasing reports in India of this virus are grabbing attention in this season.

What is HMPV?

HMPV is a respiratory virus, and the infection has resulted in a number of symptoms that are like those of the common viral infections, which include flu and influenza. The infected patients complain of cough, fever, sore throat, running nose, body aches, and headaches. Due to overlapping symptoms, HMPV infection is challenging to diagnose. The health care providers usually treat the patient based on the symptoms, not the tests for the specific virus.

Preventive Measures for HMPV Infection

To reduce the risk of infection, health organizations, including the WHO, recommend a few precautions. These include wearing a mask while venturing out, washing hands often, and a healthy balanced diet. Since HMPV does not have a specific medication, doctors prescribe symptomatic treatment, which may be in the form of over-the-counter medicines and inhalers.

HMPV Global Update

The rate of infections with HMPV has reduced in the north in China, and scientists have said that the virus is not a new threat and has existed in humans for decades. In a press conference, Wang Liping, an investigator at China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention, emphasized that the cases were under control, and that on respiratory diseases like HMPV, China communicates closely with WHO.

Experts point out that with the rising cases of HMPV all over the world, including in India, precautions need to be taken by everyone to avoid catching the infection. The virus itself is not as virulent; good hygiene practice and avoiding congested places will help decrease the spread of the virus.
