In Surat, Gujarat, a couple tied the knot at a police station after a disagreement over a supposed food shortage caused the groom’s family to cancel the wedding. This event occurred on February 2 at a wedding venue in the Varachha locality.

As reported by NDTV, the wedding was suddenly stopped when attendees expressed dissatisfaction about the lack of food. At that point, most of the wedding ceremonies had already been conducted. While the groom’s family was unwilling to continue with the proceedings, the groom, Pramod Mahto, was prepared to continue.

In search of assistance, the bride, Anjali Kumari, and her relatives went to the local police station. In reply, the police summoned the groom’s family, mediated the issue, and finally arranged for the couple’s wedding at the police station. The police even took on the role of “baraatis,” and the wedding was conducted at 4:30 a. m. on February 3.

“Most of the ceremonies were done. Only the garland exchange remained. The two families argued over a perceived food shortage, after which the groom’s side refused to proceed with the wedding,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Alok Kumar to NDTV. He added, “The woman indicated that Mahto was willing to go ahead with the wedding, but his family was not in agreement. ”

Since returning to the wedding venue might have caused additional conflicts, the couple, who hail from Bihar, finished the remaining rituals at the police station. “The groom’s family agreed to move forward with the wedding after we assisted in mediating the situation. The bride expressed worries about the chance of a new dispute if they went back to the wedding hall. Thus, we permitted them to complete the rituals (garland exchange) and get married at the police station,” the DCP elaborated.
