Ghaziabad Cop Dies Trying to Save Woman from Alleged Suicide in Canal Rescue Attempt

A traffic police constable was killed on Saturday while trying to rescue a woman who had allegedly jumped into the Hindon Canal in Ghaziabad in an attempt at suicide, officials said.

Incident Follows Domestic Dispute

The dead constable, Ankit Tomar, was in his late twenties. Officially, the police said that the event unfolded in the morning on Saturday after a woman, Aarti (23), a Vaishali Sector 2 resident, jumped into the canal after a domestic fight with her husband, Aditya.

Officers Rush to Save Woman

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Trans Hindon) Nimish Patil said, “Traffic Sub-Inspector (TSI) Dharmendra and Constable Ankit Tomar, who was on duty in the vicinity, immediately jumped into the canal to rescue Aarti.”

Some of the onlookers also joined the rescue and managed to pull Aarti out of the canal safely. Unfortunately, the incident took a tragic turn when the two officers got stuck in the muddy bottom of the canal.

Constable Pulled Out, Declared Dead

“While TSI Dharmendra was able to pull himself, Tomar was stuck. Divers later managed to rescue him, and he was taken to a hospital, where he passed away,” said the DCP.

Police took Tomar’s body for a post-mortem test after the accident. Constable Tomar’s bravery has earned him tributes for his valiant service, as the tragedy itself put the Ghaziabad police force into mourning
