The Gauhati High Court in the case All Assam Transgender Association v. The State of Assam & 7 Ors observed and has directed the Assam’s Finance Department for ensuring that the budget for setting up the office of the Transgender Welfare Board is released at the earliest. The Division bench comprising of the Chief Justice Sandeep Mehta and Justice Mitali Thakuria in the case wherein the Public Interest Litigation moved by All Assam Transgender Association observed and has directed the Director, Social Welfare Department, Government of Assam for ensuring that the office of the Transgender Welfare Board is made functional positively by June 23, 2023.
It ahs also been submitted by the counsel appearing for the Social Welfare Department that the said room has been identified in the Tritiyo Niwas run by an NGO, namely, North East Voluntary Association of Rural Development, NEVARD for setting up the office of the Transgender Welfare Board. It was further stated that a fund for an amount Rs. 6 lakhs have been approved for the office but same is stuck with the Finance Department for sanction. Accordingly, the court listed the matter to be next heard on
June 23, 2023.
