Five Workers Suffocate While Cleaning Water Tank at Mumbai Construction Site

A devastating accident occurred in Mumbai’s Nagpada area on Sunday, where five contract workers lost their lives while cleaning a water tank at an under-construction building. Despite rescue efforts, they succumbed to suffocation inside the tank.

Fire Brigade Rushes Workers to Hospital, but They Could Not Be Saved

As soon as the workers collapsed inside the tank, their colleagues at the construction site immediately alerted the fire brigade. Rescue teams arrived quickly, pulled the unconscious workers out, and rushed them to JJ Hospital. However, despite emergency medical efforts, doctors declared them brought dead upon arrival, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Workers Lost Consciousness Inside the Water Tank

The tragedy took place around 12:30 PM at the Bismillah Space building on Dimtimkar Road. According to a fire department official, all five workers entered the water tank for cleaning but soon became unresponsive due to lack of oxygen or toxic fumes inside. Their prolonged exposure likely led to suffocation, making it impossible for them to escape on their own.

Authorities Launch Investigation into the Incident

Following the tragic deaths, officials from the BMC and local police reached the site to assess the situation. A police officer confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine what went wrong. Authorities are expected to examine safety protocols, possible negligence, and whether the workers were provided with proper protective gear before entering the tank.

Concerns Over Workplace Safety

This incident has raised serious concerns about workplace safety at construction sites, particularly when it comes to hazardous cleaning tasks. Experts emphasize the need for strict safety regulations, adequate ventilation, and the use of protective equipment to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
