Ahead of AMMA elections, an FIR under Section 67A was filed against Shweta Menon over alleged obscene content in her film Kalimannu, prompting colleagues and director Blessy to call the move politically motivated.

Few days ahead of AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists) elections, an FIR has been filed against the actor Shewta Menon under section 67A of the Information and Technology Act, 2000.

The complaint suggests that she has gained financial benefits from the films because of vulgar content

The case is reportedly linked to her film Kalimannu, which included footage of Shweta’s real-life childbirth. Director Blessy, who helmed the project, expressed his confusion over the timing of the charges.

“Kalimannu went through the censor board and was certified. I don’t understand how something that wasn’t considered obscene back then has suddenly become an issue now,” he told Manorama.

Reflecting on public reactions at the time of release, Blessy added, “Back then, it must have created a certain anxiety in people, about Shweta’s pregnancy, about how vulgar it could get. I don’t know. It depends on how people think."

She added, "Some even threatened to burn down theatres. But after the movie was released, those same people had nothing to say. Their reactions only stemmed from a very ugly mindset.”

He also commented on the motive behind the case, saying, “People can choose for themselves if the case is politically motivated or not.”

Support From Within the Industry

Actor Maala Parvathi has stood firmly by Shweta’s side, calling the case 'a power tussle that is sacrificing a woman'.

In an online post, she suggested that the controversy initially targeted Kukku Parameswaran, a candidate for General Secretary, before shifting toward Shweta.

While Maala chose not to elaborate further, her remarks reflect growing concern within the industry over whether the FIR is part of a larger political strategy to influence the upcoming elections.

Historic Election Possibility Adds Fuel to the Fire

Shweta Menon is running for AMMA president against veteran actor Devan, while Kukku is contesting against Raveendran for the General Secretary position.

If elected, Shweta and Kukku would become the first women to hold the top two posts in the organisation’s history.

The election has already seen several high-profile actors, including Baburaj and Jagadeesh also withdraw their nominations, making the contest even more intense and politically charged.
