In a distressing incident at Mumbai’s Sion Hospital early Sunday morning, a female resident doctor was allegedly assaulted by a patient and his attendants, who were reportedly intoxicated. The attack occurred around 3:30 am while the doctor was on duty in the ward.
According to reports, the patient, who had come to the hospital with facial injuries, and his group of 5-6 drunken attendants began abusing and threatening the doctor during the treatment. The situation escalated as the group physically assaulted the Female doctor, causing her injuries as she tried to protect herself. Following the assault, the patient and his attendants fled the scene.
The doctor has since filed a statement with the Sion Police Station, and a First Information Report (FIR) is being processed. Representatives from the Bombay Municipal Corporation Medical Association of Resident Doctors (BMC MARD) have condemned the attack, calling it a glaring example of security lapses in hospitals.
“This incident underscores a significant failure in hospital security,” stated a BMC MARD representative. “The safety of our doctors is paramount, and there must be immediate implementation of stricter security protocols across all medical institutions.”
Dr. Akshay More from BMC MARD expressed his concern, stating, “This alarming event, occurring at 3:30 am, highlights a critical issue of safety within Mumbai hospitals. Such violence against medical professionals is unacceptable and needs urgent attention.”
The hospital community is calling for comprehensive measures to ensure the safety of healthcare workers amidst rising concerns following recent high-profile attacks on doctors across the country.
