Former Karnataka Director General of Police (DGP) Om Prakash was found murdered at his residence in Bengaluru’s HSR Layout on Sunday. The 68-year-old retired IPS officer was discovered lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds to his chest and stomach, according to the police.
Family members present at home during incident
At the time of the incident, his wife Pallavi, daughter, and another relative were present in the house. All three have been taken in for questioning. The police were alerted by a call from another individual who reported the body, sources revealed.
An FIR has been filed based on a complaint lodged by Om Prakash’s son, who was not present at the scene.
Sharp weapon suspected in attack
Bengaluru Additional Commissioner of Police Vikas Kumar confirmed that the attack appeared to have been carried out using a sharp-edged weapon.
“Today afternoon around 4-4:30 pm, we got information about the death of our former DGP and IGP Om Prakash. His son has been contacted and he is giving a complaint against the incident, and based on that, an FIR will be registered,” Kumar told reporters.
He added, “After the case is registered, a detailed investigation will be carried out… Immediately, there are no arrests. Initial investigation suggests that things might be internal in nature… It seems that some sharp weapon has been used, which caused so much blood loss that it led to death.”
Past domestic disputes under scrutiny
Sources also indicated that Om Prakash and his wife were often involved in domestic quarrels. Investigators are now probing whether a family dispute may have led to the fatal attack.
The retired DGP lived on the ground floor of his three-storey house. The police suspect the involvement of a family member, according to a report by PTI. The body has been sent for a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
A decorated career in service
Om Prakash was a 1981-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer. He served in various key roles, including as the head of Fire and Emergency Services and Home Guards before being appointed as Karnataka’s DGP in March 2015.
Police have not made any arrests as of now, but the investigation is ongoing to ascertain the motive behind the murder.
