Encounter: Naxalite Killed by Security Forces in Sukma, Chhattisgarh

In the Kistaram police station area, a gunfight erupted within a forest while distinct teams of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) were conducting an anti-Naxal operation, as stated by Sukma Superintendent of Police Kiran G Chavan. The encounter transpired during the deployment of these elite units from the CRPF, signifying the concerted effort to combat Naxalite insurgency in the region.

Sukma’s Superintendent of Police, Kiran G Chavan, reported that the skirmish unfolded amidst dense foliage as the DRG and CoBRA teams carried out their mission against Naxal forces. This engagement underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to address the insurgency threat posed by Naxalite groups in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district.

The forest skirmish occurred between Naxalites and the DRG team, approximately 450 kilometers away from the state capital of Raipur, Sukma Superintendent of Police Kiran G Chavan confirmed.

Sukma Superintendent of Police Kiran G Chavan confirmed that following the cessation of the gunfight, the body of a Naxalite and a weapon were discovered at the scene. He further stated that a search operation was ongoing in the surrounding area. This development marks the latest encounter in the ongoing efforts to combat Naxalite insurgency in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region, which encompasses seven districts, including Sukma.

According to police reports, this recent confrontation brings the total number of Naxalites killed this year to 81 in various encounters across the Bastar region. The consistent efforts of security forces in confronting and neutralizing Naxalite threats underscore the persistent challenges posed by insurgency in this area. Notably, on April 16th, security forces engaged and eliminated 29 Naxalites in an encounter in the Kanker district of the region, further emphasizing the intensity of the ongoing operations against Naxalite groups.

The recovery of a Naxalite’s body and weaponry following the engagement underscores the risks and realities faced by security personnel in their efforts to maintain law and order in the Bastar region. The continued presence and activities of Naxalite groups in the area necessitate vigilant and proactive measures from law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and security of the region’s inhabitants.
