ED Team Conducts Search at Residence of Former RG Kar Principal Sandip Ghosh

A team from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrived at the residence of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in Chinar Park, Kolkata, to conduct a search operation on Thursday. Details of the search are still emerging.

Sandip Ghosh, along with three other individuals, was remanded to judicial custody until September 23 by a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court on September 10. Ghosh was arrested by the CBI on September 2 in connection with alleged financial irregularities and corruption at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, following an order from the Calcutta High Court to investigate the matter.

On August 24, the CBI filed an official FIR against Ghosh as part of the corruption investigation. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) of Kolkata has suspended Ghosh’s membership pending the outcome of the probe. The CBI also conducted a second round of polygraph tests on Ghosh on August 26, related to an ongoing investigation into the rape-murder of a female doctor at the institution.

The Calcutta High Court has granted the CBI until September 17 to submit a progress report on the investigation. The tragic death of the woman doctor occurred on August 9 in a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

On Friday, the Supreme Court dismissed Ghosh’s plea challenging the Calcutta High Court’s decision to order a CBI probe, which included adverse remarks about him. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra ruled that Ghosh did not have standing to intervene in the public interest litigation concerning financial irregularities. Ghosh’s counsel argued that while Ghosh is not opposed to the CBI investigation, he objected to the High Court’s remarks and the connection made between him and the RG Kar rape case.

The Supreme Court noted that Ghosh was the principal at the time of the incidents and emphasized that the matter remains under investigation, with the CBI expected to provide a status report.
