Delhi Rain Highlights: Government Pledges Rs 10 Lakh Aid To Families Of Rainstorm Victims

Due to the devastating effects of unprecedented heavy rain in Delhi that lashed the city from June 28, the Delhi government has announced a compensation package of Rs 10 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives.

Delhi’s Water Minister, Atishi, revealed in a press statement that multiple deaths were reported due to drowning following the extreme rainfall, which measured 228mm on June 28.

“We have received reports of several tragic drownings on June 28, directly linked to the heavy rains,” Atishi stated. “In light of these events, it has been decided that each affected family will receive a compensation of Rs 10 lakh.”

The torrential downpour caused widespread chaos across Delhi-NCR, including severe waterlogging, thunderstorms, and lightning. A particularly tragic incident at Terminal 1 of Delhi Airport resulted in a roof collapse, claiming one life and injuring eight others. Numerous vehicles were also buried under the debris.

Atishi has directed the Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) of Revenue to work in coordination with local hospitals and the Delhi Police to identify the victims promptly, ensuring that the compensation is disbursed swiftly by the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD).

This move comes as the government seeks to provide immediate relief and support to the families affected by this natural calamity. The unprecedented rain in Delhi has highlighted the urgent need for improved infrastructure and preparedness to handle such extreme weather events in the future.
