Delhi Police Solves Hoax Bomb Threat Case: Juvenile Detained for Sending Panic-Inducing Emails

The Delhi Police has successfully cracked a series of hoax bomb threats that had caused widespread panic in schools across the national capital. After an intensive technical investigation, the Cyber Police Station (PS Cyber), South District, identified and apprehended a juvenile behind the threatening emails. On January 8, 2025, around 23 schools in Delhi received alarming emails warning of bombs on their premises. These threats disrupted academic activities, triggered emergency evacuations, and caused significant distress among students, parents, and staff. Similar threats had been reported throughout the past year, fostering fear among educational institutions in the city.
The police promptly registered an FIR under Section 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 66F of the Information Technology Act, 2000. The investigation was led by a specialized team from PS Cyber, South District, under the leadership of Inspector Hansraj Swami and the supervision of ACP Abhinendra Jain and DCP Ankit Chauhan. Using advanced digital forensics and cyber tracking methods, investigators conducted a thorough analysis of the emails’ origins. The emails were traced to the residence of a juvenile, where a search operation led to the recovery of one laptop and two mobile phones. Preliminary forensic analysis of these devices provided conclusive evidence linking the juvenile to the hoax threats. Further inquiries revealed that the juvenile had sent similar emails to over 400 schools using encrypted services and advanced tools to mask his identity.
The accused, a student at a public school, has not been named due to his status as a minor, in accordance with the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015. Initial findings indicate that the juvenile’s primary motive was to create panic and disrupt school operations. However, ongoing investigations aim to uncover the complete scope of his intentions. Additionally, the investigation uncovered a possible connection between the juvenile’s actions and an NGO closely associated with a political party. The NGO, known for its controversial activities, including opposing the hanging of convicted terrorist Afzal Guru, is being scrutinized to determine whether it influenced the juvenile’s actions or played a role in a larger conspiracy to incite public unrest.
The Delhi Police has issued a strong warning against hoax threats, highlighting the severe legal consequences under cyber and criminal laws. Such actions not only cause unnecessary panic but also divert critical law enforcement resources, endangering public safety.  This case demonstrates the Delhi Police’s dedication to ensuring the safety of educational institutions in the city. By leveraging advanced cyber forensic tools and professional expertise, the department continues to prioritize the security of students, parents, and teachers. Citizens are urged to report suspicious activities and remain vigilant to maintain a safe and secure environment for all.
