Delhi Police review CCTV footage to investigate cause of deadly railway station stampede

An investigation by Delhi Police into the tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Sunday—said to have killed at least 18—was started. In order to piece together the sequence of events and find the reason of the disaster, authorities are said to be reviewing CCTV footage.

“Our primary concern is to identify the main cause that started the rush. A senior police officer told news agency PTI, “We will examine every possible information including CCTV footage and announcements issued during that time.

Preliminary results suggest that a wrong platform change announcement might have resulted confusion and then panic among passengers. Rumored to have added to the confusion on platforms 14 and 15—where a lot of people had assembled, many on way to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh still going—this disinformation.

Acting Delhi Chief Minister Atishi announced on Saturday evening that 15 people had died and been taken to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital. Police said by Sunday morning that the death toll had grown to 18.

Fourteen of the victims were women and five were minors, including two youngsters under 10 years old. Moreover, roughly fifteen wounded passengers are now getting medical help.

At LNJP Hospital, Atishi also noted a strong police presence to uphold order and guarantee patient safety.

Preliminary studies show that the catastrophe was largely caused by serious overpopulation, itself exacerbated by train delays. Usually a busy transit node, New Delhi Railway Station was bombarded by passengers hurrying to get to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh, one of planet’s biggest religious meetings.
