Delhi Police crackdown on fake phone scam at city monuments

The Delhi Police uncovered a scam targeting tourists visiting monuments in the city, wherein scammers lured them into purchasing counterfeit phones. On Thursday, police arrested two individuals, namely Amir and Nitin, from PS Kotwali, Red Fort, for defrauding people by selling fake mobile phones.
The accused specifically targeted visitors from other states, particularly those exploring monuments in Delhi. They deceived their victims by offering what appeared to be new branded mobile phones but instead substituted them with fake or dummy devices during the sale.

According to police reports, the scam came to light after a complaint by Ankit, a 23-year-old salesman from Uttar Pradesh, who reported being duped after being shown genuine phones that were later switched for dummies.
The incident occurred at the Old Lajpat Rai Market, a popular shopping destination in the city.

Upon receiving the complaint, the police team swiftly took action, leading to the recovery of two dummy phones—a model of OPPO and Google Pixel—and the apprehension of the suspects. The accused have confessed to their involvement in the scam, revealing a modus operandi that involved setting up a sales counter and luring unsuspecting customers with the promise of high-quality products.
DCP North Manoj Meena stated in a statement that the investigation is ongoing, with efforts to verify the suspects› previous criminal records and identify any additional accomplices involved in the racket.
