The Delhi High Court welcomed six new judges today in an oath-taking ceremony that marked a key moment for the judiciary. Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya led the swearing-in, bringing fresh energy to the court’s bench. With these new judges on board, the total number of judges at the Delhi High Court has now reached 40.

While it’s still below the official strength of 60, this increase is a positive step for a court that deals with some of the most crucial cases in the country.

Who Are the New Faces on the Bench

The judges who took oath today come from various high courts across the country, bringing with them years of experience and diverse judicial perspectives. They are:

  • Justice V. Kameswar Rao
  • Justice Nitin Wasudeo Sambre
  • Justice Vivek Chaudhary
  • Justice Anil Kshetarpal
  • Justice Arun Kumar Monga
  • Justice Om Prakash Shukla

Among them, Justice Vivek Chaudhary stood out by taking his oath in Hindi, while the others opted for English. This small yet symbolic gesture highlighted the blend of tradition and modernity in the country’s judicial system.

A Change in the Collegium Too

Today’s appointments have not only enhanced the court’s strength but have also transformed the Delhi High Court’s collegium of senior judges who recommend appointments and transfers. Until now, the collegium included Chief Justice Upadhyaya, Justice Vibhu Bakhru, and Justice Prathiba M. Singh. With Justice Bakhru’s recent promotion to Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, a vacancy arose.

Following today’s oath-taking ceremony, the new collegium now consists of Chief Justice Upadhyaya, Justice Kameswar Rao, and Justice Nitin Sambre. This new lineup will be essential in shaping the future appointments of the court.

Why These Appointments Matter

The Delhi High Court deals with a huge number of cases every day, covering everything from constitutional issues to everyday civil and criminal matters. With a growing number of cases, bringing in six new judges is expected to help speed up the judicial process and cut down on delays for those involved in seeking justice.

Plus, having judges with experience from different high courts adds a wealth of perspectives to Delhi’s legal landscape. This mix of backgrounds is likely to enhance the court’s operations and create a more inclusive and balanced approach.
