On Saturday, the Delhi government sanctioned the ‘Mahila Samridhi Yojana’, a scheme offering ₹2,500 a month to women.
“Today is Women’s Day. In our cabinet meeting, we approved the scheme—keeping our poll promise of giving ₹2,500 to women,” Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta declared.
The Delhi government has kept aside ₹5,100 crore in its budget for the implementation of the scheme. A special committee, under the chairmanship of the CM, has been constituted to supervise the process. “Registration will start soon, and a portal will be opened,” she said.
BJP’s Pre-Poll Promise Turns Reality
During the Delhi Assembly polls, the BJP had promised ₹2,500 per month to women in its ‘Sankalp Patra,’ which was more than the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) promise of ₹2,100.
It has been sanctioned, and soon its portal will be opened. Women will be able to apply. A committee of ministers Kapil Mishra, Ashish Sood, and Pravesh Verma has been constituted to finalize the criteria,” Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said in a statement to ANI.
Seconding the view, Minister Ashish Sood said, “Today, the Delhi government took a historic decision. This government does not provide lip service. The money will be released soon, and the registration portal will be launched.”
AAP Asks for Delay in Implementation of Scheme
The opposition AAP, which lost Delhi, asked for the delay in implementing the financial assistance scheme.
“PM Modi and BJP national president JP Nadda had promised before the elections that in the first cabinet meeting, the scheme would be cleared and all women in Delhi would be given ₹2,500 by March 8. The first cabinet meeting happened on Thursday, but nothing was announced,” said Delhi Leader of Opposition Atishi.
The BJP won with a landslide of 48 seats out of 70, restoring it to power in Delhi for the first time in 26 years. The AAP’s numbers fell to 22 seats, and Congress couldn’t win even one.
