Delhi Civic Body’s Detailed Plan To Tackle Waterlogging Amid Heavy Rain Predictions

As predictions of heavy to very heavy rainfall loom over the capital region on Sunday, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has unveiled a comprehensive strategy to mitigate waterlogging and ensure swift responses to potential issues.

NDMC vice-chairman Satish Upadhyay outlined the council’s proactive measures, stating, “We have identified five vulnerable points prone to water stagnation—Africa Avenue, Baba Kharak Singh Marg, Panchkuian Road, Purana Quila Road, and Lodhi Estate—based on feedback from the public and traffic police officers.”

He emphasized that these areas will be under constant surveillance through CCTV cameras to monitor waterlogging conditions. “Super suction machines are operational 24/7 at all identified vulnerable points,” Upadhyay assured.

Each service station is equipped with 10 primary and 10 backup pumps dedicated to managing water accumulation effectively. To bolster response capabilities, an additional 48 employees have been deployed specifically for handling waterlogging across NDMC-administered areas.

“Superintending Engineers are overseeing operations at vulnerable points to ensure timely interventions,” Upadhyay added, underscoring the proactive stance of the council.

Further enhancing their preparedness, Upadhyay highlighted the deployment of extra pumps at Bharti Nagar to swiftly address any water accumulation issues.

The capital city has been grappling with severe repercussions from recent rainfall, which led to 11 rain-related deaths and caused the highest single-day June rainfall in 88 years on Friday. Streets were inundated, disrupting daily life and leaving commuters stranded.

As Delhi braces for more inclement weather, NDMC’s proactive approach aims to minimize disruptions and safeguard residents from the impacts of heavy rainfall.
