Odisha’s disaster management teams are on high alert as a cyclonic storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall to the state from October 27. While the storm may not make a direct landfall, it could cause strong winds and widespread downpours across the region.

Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari assured that the state is fully prepared. He said all relevant departments, including health, water, energy, and agriculture, are ready to tackle any situation.

“Odisha is highly vulnerable to natural disasters such as heavy rainfall, flooding, river swelling, and cyclones. We are preparing for an impending cyclonic storm predicted to hit its coast on the 22nd or 29th. Departments, including Health, Water Resources, Energy, and Agriculture, are fully prepared. Local Administrations across Odisha, especially in vulnerable areas, have made arrangements for relief centres, evacuation, and the provision of essential supplies. We urge people not to panic as we are fully prepared,” he said.

Weather Forecast and IMD Alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) identified a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal on October 24. This system is expected to become a depression by October 25, a deep depression by October 26, and a cyclonic storm by October 27. It is likely to move toward the coast of Andhra Pradesh.

Odisha’s coastal and southern districts are expected to face heavy rainfall from October 27 to 29. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the entire state. Some areas may even experience extremely heavy rainfall. Squally weather with wind speeds of 40-50 kmph and gusts up to 60 kmph is likely along south Odisha’s coast from October 27.

Fishermen and Coastal Safety Measures

Authorities have issued a cyclone alert for fishermen in Odisha and neighbouring coastal regions. All fishing activities are suspended. Fishermen at sea are urged to return immediately, while those docked are advised not to set out under any circumstances.

Residents in coastal areas have been warned to stay away from the seashore and keep following weather updates from the IMD.

Disaster Preparedness

The Odisha government has ensured that relief centres and evacuation plans are ready in vulnerable areas. Essential supplies, including food, water, and medicines, are in place. Local administrations are monitoring the situation closely.

The state’s proactive measures aim to minimize damage and keep residents safe. Authorities emphasize that people should remain calm and follow official instructions.

Community-Based Disaster Management

Odisha’s swift preparations highlight the growing importance of community-based disaster management. Early warnings, coordination among departments, and clear communication with coastal residents can reduce risks and save lives.

Local administrations, disaster teams, and residents are working together to ensure safety and minimize the impact of heavy rainfall and strong winds.
